Newsletter December 19 2016

November started on a high note for us with the biennial British Business Awards in China, at the rather swanky InterContinental Shanghai Pudong Hotel. The high-end gala dinner was attended by Bruce, our China Director who represented sensewhere as the finalist in the BBA Innovation Category. Following a warm formal welcome, the hosts went on to mark the outstanding achievements and commitment organisations and individuals have demonstrated to trade and investment in China.

Highlighting the role of business in delivering growth and prosperity we were then called out as the winners of the overall Innovation Category! Very proud of the distinction.

We have take-off! With so much to share through the wide array of backgrounds in our team and the heaps of accumulated industry knowledge, we now run a quarterly blog. We launched it last month with the opening post on the advancement and types of navigation (particularly indoors) contributed by Tughrul.

We hope these quarterly entries to be of great value and we encourage you to send us your feedback and suggestions for what you want us to write about!

The announcement of our British Business Award victory was printed in the Global Times distributed in China and online last month.

The Scotsman and the SBNN unanimously declared Scotland as the breeding ground for technology and sensewhere taking lead in Edinburgh as one of the top 5!

The Drum recognised us as particularly attractive to Chinese investors mentioning Tencent’s move to take on our value added services to hundreds of millions of users whilst looking to drive a more innovation-based economy in China.

We also appeared in the Geoconnexion across two pages of the magazine featuring our CTO’s take on the evolution of indoor location.

Following this year’s investment into the company sensewhere are adding some new heads to the mix to strengthen the core management and engineering teams. Stemming from our ongoing recruitment efforts our Edinburgh-based team welcomed the top notch CFO Paul Grafham who now looks after sensewhere’s finance, HR and Administration functions.

Ian MacPherson joined as Engineering Director to bring technical development and management experience along with industry knowledge, helping drive the company’s engineering and customer deployments.

Anna Majek was promoted to take on more HR responsibilities, developing and implementing new administrative systems and to continue to look after sensewhere’s communication strategy as Comms and Office Manager.

It is without a doubt that location-based games have transformed the market this year with blockbuster titles including Pokémon Go and Zombies, Run! taking over the world. Players young and not so young have been seen moving around streets and venues, interacting with the world around them pocketing virtual points or scanning surroundings. Because entertainment of this kind relies on GPS for location, players are largely limited to playing outside, and poor positioning results in urban areas or inside buildings can lead to compromised game performance and gamer frustration.

sensewhere extends the location-based gaming experience indoors and provides better user experience with greater accuracy and coverage everywhere. We can also detect GPS fraud to prevent cheating. sensewhere’s vast database pumps all the location data into the airwaves of these as yet untapped big buildings. Bringing gaming indoors is a big win for retail shops and venue operators as they can use virtual game rooms to draw gamers into or near their place of business.

We will be showcasing sensewhere at the world’s biggest gaming trade show in San Francisco this March 1-3rd so to talk to us about this please contact Anna or Blake and visit us at stand 2116 in South Hall!

We have been to a number of events this autumn starting with September 26 – 27 when Blake attended the IAB MIXX conference in New York. This two-day event was where marketers, advertising executives, publishers, and technologists came together to share insights about the reinvention of media, platforms, creative and business models.

Right after there was the Advertising Week attended by Blake on September 27th – 30th. This event is described as a premier event for marketing, brand, advertising and technology professionals and took place in New York City. It was where leaders in the marketing and advertising industries gathered for a week of thought leadership, networking opportunities and one-of-a-kind special events in the evenings.

On Nov 2nd Blake was a speaker for the LMBA panel at GSMA Mobility Live!. He talked about the IOL (internet of Location Opportunity) amongst other chats on personal data and connected living. GSMA Mobility Live! covers latest technology innovations and this two-day conference programme featured thought leaders from across the region and representatives from the largest MNOs, the most exciting technology suppliers and industry movers and shakers.

We had Bruce attend the Shanghai Summit on the 15th of December as a VIP guest where a range of tech companies took part in panel discussions around the trends in indoor location technology. Conversations particularly revolved around location apps with firms like Palmap, Indoor Atlas and Invesense making insightful presentations and talking IoT.

Christmas Dinner at Le Monde

Having had the team travel from China and the US to unite at the Edinburgh HQ on December 7th it’s safe to say we celebrated the festive season in style. Pulled some crackers and a heavy load of techy jokes at the classy Le Monde restaurant. Loads of food, drink and a jolly time all round!

We continuously look to expand our team. Currently especially looking for:

  • GIS Mapping and Navigation Systems Engineer or Developer
  • Cloud Computing Engineer R&D
